Good Morning, Nine Lives Community!  (It’s still morning in Australia!)

Some recent events have occurred that prompts me to write this post.   I know I am not a very visible presence around the archive but I can assure you all that I am here daily, behind the scenes, and very much aware of things.  I want to talk about the archive a little bit, about how it came to be.  For those of you who know me or have been with us a little while, you might already know the story, but I do think there are some salient points that need to come across.

Something like 8 years ago, a group of fellow Spuffy shippers (Spike + Buffy) were deeply dissatisfied with how cruelly some writers were being treated by another archive.  We decided to take a stand, put our money where our mouths were, and set up our own archive where we could offer a community atmosphere, help, respect, and a place that was ultimately safe for readers to access their favourite authors.  Now Elysian Fields is one of the largest remaining Spuffy archives.  We did require a decent standard of writing and strongly promote the importance of betas—not just for picking up spelling and grammar errors but in forming a relationship with someone you trust who can tell you the truth about the way your fic is travelling.  For those of us who have used a beta, we can tell you it is of infinite value.  In requesting this we have never been rude to a writer—have never told them we thought their writing was bad and that we didn’t want them at the archive. We offer help and support but all in all, we want writing we can read and review and sometimes a writer might need help.  THAT was the crux of setting up Elysian Fields.

Nine Lives came about because I entered the Walking Dead Fandom and found a hole regarding accessible Caryl fanfiction.  I already knew how a community spirit could be fostered through an exclusive pairing archive, and I wanted people to be able to come to the fandom and find all the fic in one place.  Obviously this hinges on authors joining and posting their work here, and so many of you have been wonderful at encouraging writers to come and take part and through all of your support we have grown, and we will continue to grow as we can see the member numbers climb every day.  This archive was NOT free to set up, but it was my gift to all of you.  The only things I expected out of it was an appreciation of our lovely couple—Caryl—and a respecting, supportive community.  I believe that we have mostly achieved this and it makes me extremely happy and proud.  Fairies Masquerade and Susan are now also major reasons why this site is as successful as it is and I’d be nowhere without either of their help, support and contributions, so to see everyone’s support for them is incredibly uplifting.

I do think some things need to be said, though, about some of the experiences here lately that have made it a little less pleasant behind-the-scenes than it could be, and they are things that Jessa and I have decided need to be addressed.  There are certain behaviours that we WILL NOT accept on this site.

1) We will not condone members contacting other members through PM’s telling them how best they should update their work.  If a new writer comes and chooses to upload all their work at once, that is up to them.

2) WE WILL NOT act like the writing police and tell another writer what they can or cannot write regarding their work in either McReedus or Caryl.  We have ratings for a reason and warnings and what one person might find unacceptable, another won’t.  We have never been in the habit of banning people due to kinks or content upsetting to just one member and we will not be starting now.

3) We will not condone being told how to run the site in any way—which does not include any reasonable suggestions or input.

4) We will not be held to ransom with threats of deleting fic.  If you don’t like how we run this site, feel free to leave.  We will not beg anyone to stay.  We also DO NOT BELIEVE that any one author’s following will make or break this archive.  If a writer chooses to leave because of issues with the staff (which is all donated time, I will add, coming from love and dedication to this ship) then we hope the readers will still remain to be entertained by the other writers here, but we will not beg you to stay if you wish to follow the writer.

The most important point, I think, is this. WE DO NOT OWE ANY ONE WRITER ANYTHING BECAUSE OF THE READERS THEY BRING INTO THE SITE.  This site is our gift to YOU, and I will never feel like I am indebted to one writer above all others for the support they have brought this site.  I would hope that our readers come to enjoy a multitude of writers, not just one, and that they stay because of the support and community that this site is all about.  Jessa and I will no longer tolerate the multitude of efforts to undermine other writers on this site, nor attempts to influence how we run things.  We are ALL playing by the same rules and it will stay fair and true to you all.

Thank you again for being here and for showing your support.  We would be nothing without all of you.

Megan

Hear, hear.  Respect.

Thank you, Shelly.  Respect is all I ask--for us and especially for fellow writers.

- Ravenesque on September 11, 2014 10:42pm

I love this archive. I think it's perfect for those who do not wish to wade through other pairings/characters because not everyone knows how to label properly when they upload fic elsewhere. So coming here knowing its going to be THIS pairing, I am grateful for this archive, and I want to thank you for putting forth so, so much effort for US. I'd never expect anything more than what you all freely give. And it sucks that anyone in this portion of fandom would make demands that have been stated. I would never presume to think that I was more important than I am. I don't like to be friends with anyone that feels they are superior to anyone else. It takes all kinds of people to make a fandom work, but do not ever assume you are better than me. And I am sure a lot feel the same way. I fully support you and this archive.

I thank you and Susan and Jessa for all of your donated time and effort and what you gifted to us with this archive! You are all truly a blessing to us, and it saddens my heart to think that anyone would behave in the manner that's being expressed. From the bottom of my heart, you all have my respect, gratitude, and appreciation! Heart

I have to say thank you to everybody who runs this archive, it is amazing, and I am so grateful to have been told about it.  Because of the people who donate their time for the archive as well as the other authors and betas, I have had a wonderful time here, discovering all the Caryl love that you all have shown.  I love losing myself in the stories here and I just have to say thank you again!  Heart

As a recent arrival to this site, it's been a balm to my soul every single day, reading wonderful fic after wonderful fic. I am beyond grateful to everyone who runs this archive, and the authors who bring these characters so fully to life. I didn't know the history of the archive, so that makes me appreciate even more the labor of love that it is. Thank you so so much!

- jtsbar on September 11, 2014 11:27pm

I love this site so much, for the fic and for the atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement that has been fostered. Although I've not experienced any of the issues brought forward in this post, it's disappointing that some have chosen to bring the negative attitudes that prevail on other fic sites to this haven of Caryl. Thank you to Megan, Jessa and Susan for this amazing opportunity to share and promote our ship, and shame on those who feel it necessary to impose their controlling attitudes on our lovely little community. If you don't like it here, don't stay. Some of us are very happy here and in fact, are considering proposing to the site administrators so we can live together forever in blissful shippiness.

- bonnyblonde on September 12, 2014 12:14am

Awwwwww, marriage proposals?  I might cry!  Really, though, I am overwhelmed and humbled by eveyrone's support.  Thank you so much for being part of this place!

- Ravenesque on September 12, 2014 12:21am

We love you guys! It makes my day to see the support for Nine Lives and to see eveyrone taking such pleasure in this archive.

- Fairies Masquerade on September 12, 2014 12:38am

The fact that something/s occurred behind the scenes to warrant this post, frankly horrifies me. You all do such a great thing with this site, and my fandom life has been enriched in my fics finding a place here.

There is a strong community on this site, close knit and welcoming. The idea that some might seek to squander all that makes me irritated on all our behalves.

Another big, heartfelt thanks to the Peta, Susan, FM and anyone else that has a hand in the creation, funding, and daily running of this wonderful site!

Y'all need a donation button. Just saying. Oh, and also a great big HUG. <3

- meeshie on September 12, 2014 2:00am

I agree with everything above and if it weren't for the massive amounts of painkillers I'm taking at the moment; would probably burst into tears just thinking about all the pressure that you guys have been having to deal with behind the scenes...Just wanted you to know that although I'm still new to this site, I love you all very much and will always be there to support everyone whatever they needWaveHeartConsider this an electro hug sent over from me to all of you...

- notjaneausten on September 12, 2014 2:24am

We are glad to have you, painkillers and all! LOL.  Meeshie, a donation button maybe when funds dry up!

- Ravenesque on September 12, 2014 2:31am

Okay I'm beyond repulsed that anyone would behave the way you've described here. Part of what I love about this community is reading and being in awe of other peoples work and in return them making me feel like I'm doing a good job too. I can't imagine why anyone would be so disrespectful. You said it though Megan, if they don't like how things are run here then heres the door... Don't let it hit ya where the good lord split ya!! Everyone behind the scenes does a stellar job and I for one am both in awe and proud of you. This site has become a huge part of my life recently and I'm so thrilled to see it go from strength to strength.  Thank you to everyone who makes it the amazing place it's become!!

- Equuleus86 on September 12, 2014 3:31am

Big props and attagirls from me for making this place a reality, and putting up with egos and other BS far above and beyond the call, IMHO.  I value the sanity and balance here more than I can even say.

- subversivegrrl on September 12, 2014 3:25pm

The website has expectations and I would say that it's achieving its goal.

No one author nor reader has any more "pull" than another.  Each person is a fan of certain authors (and I use plural here, because I'm sure you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who is only here for one person), and each author has their own following of fans, sometimes gaining and sometimes losing one or two along the way.

No one should feel that they have the right to dictate anything about what another person writes.  It's as simple as that.  Write what you want to write, label it appropriately.  It's then the reader's responsibility to make informed decisions about what they want to read.  If you don't like something you're reading, don't read it.

There's no reason that everyone can't co-exist with one another in peace.  There's no reason that anyone needs to be attempting to dictate what anyone else on the site does as long as they're causing no harm.

It's good to see that's been very clearly established for anyone who wasn't sure if it was OK to behave in such a manner.  Having that understood will only serve to make the archive a much nicer place for all readers and writers to enjoy fic in peace.

I want you lovely mods of Nine Live to know I love each one of you. This site gives everyone a safe place to be happy in our OTP.

As one of those who left the unnamed Spuffy archive so many years ago in protest of the way some authors and readers were treated I want you all to know this site is a haven.

I have gone through fandom wank before and with this fandom I choose to stay mostly silent as not to get mixed up in crazy issues. This site is my only outlet where I actually speak...when I feel I might be helpful, or have something relevant to say.

I am happy you all spelled out what will not be tolerated. It makes for a much happier place to be.

- UncagedMuse on September 12, 2014 11:11pm

I second and third everything that has been said here.   Megan, Jessa and Susan have made this a welcoming place for all of us and all they ask is that we just be nice. Nice to each other as authors, nice to those we review, nice to our Admins. This site is my haven. I can't thank them enough for all they do to make it possible.

- darylsdiva1 on September 13, 2014 2:32am

I just want to hug you all for being so understanding and supportive.  This was not an easy News Item to write but it finally resolved some isues that had been getting out of control.  Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

- Ravenesque on September 13, 2014 7:38am

I am still so new to this site, but so Glad its here! For what its worth I am so grateful to each and everyone here, that feeds my obsession with these wonderful characters! Sorry this happened. The talent here is mindboggeling BTW. And the fact that people care enough to even do something like this is amazing.

- krissyg927 on September 13, 2014 12:15pm

I'm so terribly out of the loop these days, I had no idea anything has been happening.  But though I've been sort of invisible the last couple months, please know that I adore this site and have the deepest appreciation for you lovely ladies that run it.  It's a great place that continues to feel safe and supportive.  Props to you for making this a place where the grown-ups can come and play.  Massive hugs to all of you!  And possibly some slightly inappropriate butt squeezing.

- Little Cinch on September 18, 2014 11:20pm

Just wanted to say I love this site and all you do. That a fellow author would behave in such a deplorable manner makes me sad. Glad you very clearly laid out what won't be tolerated on here.  Thank you!
