In short, Negan's men taint their weapons with walker gore to give anyone injured the fever. Dwight shoots Daryl with an arrow in the battle, and Tobin manages to get Daryl to safety but is stabbed in the process. As everyone injured falls ill they realise what Negan has done and know any injury, however slight, will be fatal. Unbeknown to them all Dwight has been true to his word, and has shot Daryl with a clean arrow.
Carol tends to Tobin and then Daryl on their respective death beds.
