There were many different kinds of motivation - Love, Fear, Necessity. Daryl didn’t think there was anything that could motivate him to engage with the commonwealth. Until there was... They had saved her life but would Daryl ever get the Carol he knew, and loved, back?
Daryl knows Carol can handle herself out there but he still finds himself tracking her and it's lucky that he did, only she probably doesn't see it that way.
